The business changed.
The operation didn't.
Trout Creek helps mid-market service businesses integrate acquisitions, increase capacity, and modernize high-volume operations. You work directly with Clay, from diagnosis through implementation.
Bring Trout Creek in when:
An acquisition closed, but the operation never came together.
Teams still use different systems, follow different processes, and answer to different owners. The transaction is complete; the integration is not.
Volume is rising and the staffing plan is simply to add people.
Before approving more headcount, determine whether the constraint is volume, process design, exception handling, or unclear ownership.
Leadership reporting depends on manual reconciliation.
Critical numbers live in side spreadsheets or require intervention from the few people who understand how everything connects.
The company wants automation before the workflow is stable.
Automation will magnify whatever is already in the process. The work comes first: define it, assign ownership, establish controls, and then decide where technology will help.
The work
Integration
Clay helps leadership decide how the combined operation will run: who owns what, which processes survive, how systems and data move, and how service continues during the transition.
Capacity
Trout Creek redesigns high-volume workflows so growth does not require cost and headcount to rise at the same rate. The work focuses on constraints, handoffs, exceptions, controls, and measurable throughput.
Modernization
Technology is evaluated against an operating result, not against a trend. Clay helps determine whether the answer is a process change, better data, automation, AI, a new system, or no new technology at all.
Operating results before Trout Creek
All four results were achieved in Clay's operating roles before founding Trout Creek, working with broader cross-functional teams.
How Clay approaches the work
Clay starts by establishing how the operation actually works and what it costs today. Changes are measured against capacity, cycle time, cost, error rates, or service, not implementation milestones. The work includes ownership, documentation, controls, and training so the operation does not depend on Trout Creek after the engagement ends.
Ways to engage
Most work starts with an assessment or a scoped project. Interim leadership is for when the function needs an accountable executive now.
Operations assessment
Fixed scope, fixed feeFor when you know something is wrong and want a clear diagnosis before committing to a larger change. Clay traces how work moves through the operation: volumes, handoffs, systems, data, and where time and cost go. You receive a written diagnosis, the changes worth making, and a sequence. Useful whether or not Trout Creek does the next phase.
Project engagement
Scoped to a defined outcomeA specific operating problem with a measurable result: an acquisition to integrate, a workflow to redesign, a reporting or control gap to close, a system transition to run. Clay works alongside your team through the build. The project ends when the operation runs the new way without him.
Interim leadership
Defined period, monthlyFor a vacancy, integration, or restructuring that cannot wait for a permanent hire. Clay takes responsibility for the function for an agreed period, establishes control, leads the changes that cannot wait, and prepares it for its next owner.
About Clay
Before founding Trout Creek, Clay Clark spent fourteen years in education-services operations, moving from frontline roles to leadership of a 150-person organization serving more than 125 university partners.
His responsibilities included post-acquisition integration, high-volume service operations, data and system transitions, process redesign, automation, and collaboration with engineering teams. He holds an MBA in finance.
That experience is most relevant to service businesses in which delivery crosses several teams, systems, and handoffs, and where operating complexity has begun to constrain growth.
Every Trout Creek engagement is led directly by Clay.
Trout Creek takes its name from Trout Creek Ranch in Fairplay, Colorado, which belonged to Clay's grandfather.
